Travel arrangements went well and ROC joined PV on the Nurnberg to Bamberg train at Forchheim - where ROC had been camping out for a couple of days.
The bus back was a luxury coach which did not bother with the intermediate stops and whisked us straight back to Forchheim.

The notes get a bit brief from now on - indeed there are none apart from the name of the bar (in this case miss-spelt) and the beer. Anyway, seem to remember a rather traditional bar with low lighting and an unhelpful owner – no business card, no stamp and no humour. The beer, however, was rather tasty.

Very traditional pub which is famous for RN’s crotch video. The front bar was very busy but we managed to squeeze onto a table. Attempted conversation but both the locals and ourselves spoke little English. If popularity determines the best beer in Forchheim then it must be Neder. Not quite sure what beer we tried; it is noted as assbier but this could well have been Festbier. A local bar for local people.

We were in need of sustenance and ROC recommended a bar just down the road. Described as a Mexican Bar Grill we settled for some steak and chips. The beer as described as Neder Helles on the menu which probably meant the Pils.

After the meal we headed for the station and the next thing we remember is being woken by some German lads on the train. For some reason they thought we were cool and the most boisterous wanted our opinion on his singing voice. He was very good and we agreed if we had ever watched the X Factor and knew what it was all about, he was talented enough to appear. As the chat continued it transpired the train we were on was headed for Nurnberg – totally opposite to the direction we needed. Anyway, with no toilets on the train we decided to stay on to Nurnberg so PV could relieve himself before getting the next train back to Bamberg. All objectives achieved, but please note the only toilets PV could find were in McDonalds and cost €0.50 per slash – worth every cent.

PV had worked out a little brewery tour via train for the day. First up was Kronach which turned out to be a rather pretty little town with a schloss on the hill overlooking the settlement.

The Gasthof is on the main road with the brewery behind accessed through an archway. The pub itself was not traditional, lacking the usual paneling and scrubbed pine tables. Instead there were some beer barrel stools at the bar and automatic doors to the toilets. Neither the bar nor the beer was particularly memorable.

The old building has been gutted and a bright modern bar/restaurant installed complete with an integral brewery. The nice lad behind the bar explained they had light, dark and Spezial beers. How strong is the Spezial? - 6% - we will have the light! But of course we had to try the Spezial before we left. The light made PV burp so must have been gassy.

Back to the station and back to Lichtenfels which we had passed through on the way to Kronach. Didn’t really see much of the town as the brewery was on the outskirts in the village of Oberwallenstadt and we took a taxi.

The outside looked like a concrete shed more suitable for a transport café than a Gaststatte but the interior was a proper restaurant. So we had something to eat; something pork. In a separate room some model train fans were having a meeting. PV did not join them. The large beer garden was completely empty. The Braumeister, Michael, had been brewing for 25 years and his experience showed in the well crafted beers.

The ordered taxi arrived in time but the train to Kulmbach was running 15 minutes late! Not only that, the indicator board kept showing the wrong information. PV pointed this out to the waiting driver and guard and was rewarded with a Gnue. Luckily a young lad had his home made mobile ghetto blaster (shopping trolley, 12 volt car battery and stereo) with him to entertain us while we waited. It was a bit of a walk from the station to Hofer Strasse past the site where the Kulmbacher Beerfest would be held the following week. Not an unpleasant stroll though, as it provided views of the overlooking hilltop castle. From the bridge the view of the allotments provided an insight into what some Germans do on the weekends – each one had a substantial shed (cabin) on the plot complete with brick bar-b-q. Mind you, the return walk was through the old part of the town and much more picturesque.

Located at the site of the former Monchshof brewery (now taken over by Kulmbacher). Also on the site the Bayerisches Brauereimuseum which still brews. This is a really large Gasthaus with lots of different drinking rooms to choose from. We of course chose the servery bar and occupied the Stammtisch. PV got the order wrong but got away with it by a free taster.

Located in a converted water mill, this place was full of character. It also turned out to have very helpful staff – not only a business stamp but a free beer calendar and would you like a free pack of Franconian Beer Trump cards? Yes and thank you very much. The couple we meet on the way in decided it was getting a bit chilly outside and asked if they could join our table. Seigfried and Angelika had driven from Munchberg especially to try this brewery’s beer. They too were disappointed that both the July Special and Summer seasonal beers had run out. The disappointment did not last overlong as the two that were on were very nice indeed. Both our table companions were into nature and Seigfried likes to build insect nesting boxes. As he was driving he limited his second beer to a Schnitt but while he was away in the bogs Angelika sneaked herself a full one. Encouraged by the generous size of the ‘cut’ beers we too finished with a Schnitt – it must have been a new barrel of the Hell as it was fresher than the first. To cap it all a very nice girl invited us to go and see her paintings but we had to decline as we had a train to catch.

This is really out in the boondocks. The very traditional Gasthaus had a few people dining and we decided to join them. Can’t really remember what we ordered for the main course but the appetizer of lard with bits plus bread was very PV/ROC. We said goodbye to the other diners as they left until there was just we two, Suzi the dog and the young owners, all of whom agreed the train we needed was at 21.11.

You have to pay a returnable deposit for the Krug (€5) at each Keller visited and pay for every piss. The beer was about €7 for .5 ltr. At the Eichhorn Keller, Norbert was working on the Krug stand; Ziggy was serving. We managed to get on the table with Wolfram Mayor and his family. Very nice chatting to them and after his family left we bought Wolfram a Neder Swartz-Anna and made our wibbly wobbly way back to the station and home to Bamberg.

Helga was serving the few customers left this late on a Sunday. We almost left before closing time when a group of Finns turned up. Having toured the Bamberg breweries they may have even been as drunk as we were. Thomas (Ashan) was the publican of The Gallows Bird in Espoo. His mate’s favourite beer is Dark Star Hophead – had we heard of it? Yes, it is available in a pub near us and cost somewhat less than the £6 a pint it cost him.

With PV’s flight not until 19.00 we had a chance to do a bit of a reconnoiter of Nurnberg in advance of Mengo’s trip later in the year. We had a look round the centre and then headed out to Klinikum to try Landbierparadies Haxenhausle – it was closed until 16.00h.
