The snow put paid to the South West Trains service between Ash Vale and Ascot which, in turn scuppered our chances of getting to our chosen R the W destination of Windsor. A more local alternative was chosen and it was all off to Farnham.

The happy landlords, Nic ky and Christy, were hoping for an influx for lunch. In anticipation Nicky had driven down to Sainsbury's for some bread and reported the driving conditions were dangerous. Mengo were happy to be walking.

This is now more a wine bar than a pub and caters for the younger crowd - even providing a vodka based alco-pop on draught to keep them happy. James, the barman, was keen for us to return and gave us some 15% discount vouchers for their burgers.

PV received special dispensation from Mengo to try the Shepherd Neame Christmas beer. After trying it, he wished they hadn't - it was bloody awful. Trev came in for his usual Saturday lunchtime session and parked his arse at the bar. The barmaid, Sarah, was fit.

Thankfully the juke box still has the same old tunes. The pub also retains the well remembered friendly atmosphere. There was a choice of eight 'lagers' but how many were actually brewed abroad? It looked like two and between us we tried both of them.

Landlord considered the Tyskie the most consistent of all the Polish beers he had tried. It was certainly the tastiest beer we had tried so far this R the W.

Fortunately they had a fit barmaid as a trip down the cellar was required for more bottles. The bar was busy but the back room was empty and there was plenty of room for Mengo to discuss the usual bollocks without upsetting the other customers.

The pub was absolutely heaving with the latest in set of Farnham, typified by the customer who wanted to pay for her water with plastic. KOC was dismayed the Beck's cost £3.20 a bottle - he was drinking the same stuff at home last week for 45p!

Again, absolutely heaving with the in set of Farnham but unfortunately this time including all their children. The good thing was the very nice landlady was still in charge.

Then it was back to the station for the journey back to Aldershot and the comfort and warmth of Cally's proper pub.

PubLocationOS Map RefGarden Gate Aldershot GU11 3BT CommentHome again at last. PV upset Cally by suggesting the Black Cat Mild might be the same barrel as last week and was rightly scolded for doing so. TM surprised us all by trying the Otter Amber instead of sticking with the IPA.
