The interior of this old hotel may retain some of the early architectural features but instead of the once elegant dining you now have cheesy music and fried food smells. Still it was warm and cheery as was the welcome from the barman. The beers were well kept if uninspiring.

The landlady of 24 years, Gillie, decided to take a look at the newly arrived customers in the otherwise empty public bar and stayed glued to PV throughout our stay. As Ron the barman observed to FN, Gillie was a bit tipsy which probably accounted for her garrulousness. But she was not so far gone to let us know what the freehold cost when they purchased the pub. Her son, Shaun, currently does the cellar and a good job he does too. The Flowerpots Bitter was absolutely stonking and the Hammerpot White Wing not far behind.

The last knockings of the previous weekend’s beer festival were available. (Not that this determined our decision to come to Alton in anyway.) Phil was in the most talkative mood, perhaps because the festival had been successfully negotiated. Not that he thought he had made a profit – a bit of kit had broken and he lost a lot of beer down the drain. All the beers tried were in top condition.

Trying the Good Ship Arabella was like drinking vomit. On hearing this derisory comment, the landlord, Graham, tried it again and found it enjoyable. Apparently, it was just a matter of taste! Whatever, it was enough to finish us off and we headed for the train home.
