This popular gastro pub keeps faith with real ale, offering six including two from local breweries. All bar one of the beers tried were in good condition (the Alton’s Pride was disappointing) and reasonably priced for this area. All the talk was about cakes and non alcohol beer. Extremely fit service.

Arrived to find Germany’s World Cup run had been terminated by Spain. Steve, the landlord, was happy to chat and pleased to show an advance copy of News and Ale, back after a year gap. A quick glance at this full colour magazine showed it to be light on articles but heavy on adverts. Steve was disappointed there was no ‘pub clips’ section. As will many. Again extremely fit service, even if the view was below par.

The Spitfire had to be rejected – it had black lumps floating in it, but the TEA was fine. There needs be a Health and Safety regulation to dissuade the barmaid from bending down to get the glasses – the older generation could suffer heart attacks.

On entering the barmaid informed us to be quick as the pub was shutting at 10.30 pm. We rushed through the ordering process only to find the landlord ordered a stay of execution, which allowed for time for another one. On past experience we avoided the price reduced beer and stuck with the full price offerings. Not that prevented one going for the vomit inducing Great Bear.

The patio pot plants were in full bloom and looking lovely – an oasis in the brick jungle. The philosophical question posed by those who managed the full trip was ‘why drink up the GG’. No definitive answer was arrived at but then only the Beck’s Blue drinker was sensible enough to judge.
