RTW 2016

Date: 17 December 2016 Round the World

Sampled by:

PV, ROC, KOC, RN, PC, TM, TC, JA, SH & MF

The suggestion had been for Oxford but the general feeling was this would take too long so in the end we headed back to London. Mind you it is a big place and provides many different places to try and we had never done the Westminster area before. This year we were joined by SH, who had been RtW before, and MF, who had not. The ‘hometown’ group headed for Lambeth and the Jolly Gardeners where TC and JA joined us waiting patiently for the pub to open at midday.

The interior of the pub was as remembered but the beer offerings were now exclusively German – real ale had disappeared along with the handpumps. This did however provide for a much larger German selection. Unfortunately the first two choices (both Dunkel Weisse) were off (problems with dispense) so we opted for a dark lager. Food looked good.

This comfortable boozer is one of the Nicholson’s chain of pubs and offered an excellent choice of real ales – 6 on hand pump and up to four on a stillage. Most opted to try the real ales but PC remained true to RtW and had something Mexican, something with chili in it. The landlady’s partner was propping up the bar and warned us off the Barley Mow – he considered the beer selection was rather esoteric and he had had a poor couple of pints there

This spacious modern brasserie offers a large selection of British, Continental & American beers on keg and in bottles. There were also two handpumps to cater for the real ale drinkers. The only real downside was they let children in and, as bad luck would have it; the only other group in attendance contained a number of the annoying little persons. Not sure what everyone had here but SH tried the keg Camden Brewery Ink – a poor variety of Guinness.

Of course, after being warned off we just had to try it. This large corner pub had lost all of its separate bars and with it a lot of its charm. Still the Eastern European staff were welcoming and the beer quality perfectly good. There were a few foreign bottled beers available but unfortunately no note made of the choices made.

Well it was in a cellar. And it had pine tables and benches. And it had waitresses dressed in Bavarian costume. But was it like a Munich Keller? Well, not really. However, the saving grace was it had German beer. But overall with the VERY loud music it was not very comfortable and we only stayed for one.

As good as in Munich? Who cares, it was very nice

Then it was a very interesting walk weaving through the foreign tourists as they took in the sights of Westminster Abbey and The Houses of Parliament before crossing Westminster Bridge and finding sanctuary in:-

This modern craft beer emporium is located in a railway arch on the Waterloo East to Charing Cross line near the Festival Hall. Offering 20 keg, 6 cask and numerous bottled beers from all over the world, there was an over abundance of choice. It is no wonder ROC ensured it was on the day’s itinerary. It also provided PV with his beer of the day – the Pentonville Oyster Stout was exceptionally good. Next time we should just head here!
