Absolutely tipping it down at 7.55 pm, stopped by 8.00. Is our luck
changing? Well there were no punctures and the only difficulty was
the stinging nettles along the riverbank on the way to The Shepherd
and Flock. Ouch.

The low lighting level in the bar made the pub rather dark but we
were all illuminated by the excellent Shepherd and Neame beers
served. Both the Kent Best and Whitstable Bay were in fine form
although we were slightly disappointed with the Spitfire, which was
still good but seemed to be missing some of its usual sparkle.

Shepherd & Neame Kent Best 4.1 £2.75 3.5 Bloody lovely

Be warned, they play the music VERY LOUD in this pub. This suited its
main clientele, the majority of whom seemed to be females under 30
years old, but was a bit wearing for us old buggers. With such a
young customer base it is a bit surprising to find available such a
good range of real ale. The Cottage Johnson’s Single Bitter tasted
like cough mixture but their Breast Bitter was more to the point. The
Weltons Old C o c k y was not as good as it thought it was. All the real
ales tried were served too cold.

England 1 – 2 Germany. Nothing much changes, apart from the range of
beers carried by this pub. And what is this? Unpasteurized Irish
Stout. No, not Guinness (they took to pasteurization years ago), but
Milestone Black Pearl, a truly wondrous beer. The Archers Sea Breeze
was also very good.

Nice quite evening in the ‘Gate’. Outside with the smokers it was a
bit livelier. The Ruddles Hedgerow made a convert of Frank. Must be
the summer fruits it doesn’t taste of.
