STAR BEER FESTIVAL - Godalming, GU7 1EL - April 2008

Travellers

PV, MG, ROC, KOC, RN & PC
Paul and Maz went back on the Monday (24th)

Comment

The earliest Easter possible brought the first Star festival of the
year forward into late March. The weather decided to celebrate the
event with a mixture of rain, sleet, snow and hail, interspersed with
bright sunshine and all driven along by some very cold winds. We got
the lot Saturday afternoon and eventually had to retire hurt from the
marquee and into the pub.
The cold also meant the beers were served below their optimum
temperature and some even had a chill haze.
Andy’s theme this time was ‘an A-Z of British Breweries at Easter’
and although there was some cheating (‘Z’ was represented by a
Bazen’s beer, Zebra Best), he did manage to represent every letter of
the alphabet with something. Paul and Kev were overjoyed to see ‘J’
represented by Jarrow’s Jobling’s Swinging Gibbet and had to try it
for Winnie.
We were joined by Bob Southwell, the ex chairman of SHB CAMRA. During
the course of the afternoon we mentioned some of our early beer
festival memories, including Luton, where we used to follow the
festival by watching The Hatters play. One game we remembered in the
early 1980’s was against QPR. It turned out Bob may have also been at
this game as he refereed Luton v QPR around this time.

As we just happened to be in the area Paul and Maz called in to see
