One of the longer bike rides of the year, just a pity only ROC did
the whole trip from Aldershot. All the rest caught the train to
Bentley before cycling up the hill to Binsted. ROC arrived late.
Should have got the train!

Cedars - Binsted - SU 722 410

Peter and his father, Tim, have had the pub for 14 months and
are enjoying the trade very much. Slowly improving the décor and
facilities and are currently working on the garden area. A new
roofed patio should be ready for the Beer Festival being held over
the weekend of 29/30/31 August. They plan to have 16 beers plus
ciders on. Beer is sourced from the Punch Taverns list but Peter is
trying to talk them into letting him have one non-list beer from a
local brewery on a regular basis. Recently had Triple fff Moondance
and this went down rather well (and quickly) with the customers. The
current guest beer, Bateman’s Valliant, was very good.

Brewer Beer % Price Mark Comment
Courage Best 4.0 £2.60 3
Shepherd Neame Spitfire 4.5 £2.90 3
Bateman’s Valiant 4.2 £2.90 3.5 Good premium bitter
Skinners Cornish Knocker 4.5 £2.90 3

White Hart - Holybourne - SU 737 409

Since giving up the tenancy of The Golden Pot, David and Melanie are
enjoying managing this house. Have increased wet sales by 150% since
taking over and have got the food side just how they and the
customers like it. We can confirm the food is very good as we were
invited to finish off the Rugby Clubs buffet - they had catered for
60 but only 40 turned up! The beers tried, in particular The Rev.
James, was in fine form as well.

Brewer Beer % Price Mark Comment
Greene King XX Mild 3.0 £2.60 3.5 Tasty, if weak, Mild
Greene King IPA 3.6 £2.80 Not tried
Brains The Rev. James 4.5 £3.10 4 Excellent
Courage Best 4.0 £2.80 3.5 Good example

Queens Head - Holybourne - SU 728 405

Chris was no help with who the owners are but was an excellent
barman. The redecoration is still a work in progress. Although the
real ale prices compare favourably with The White Hart, unfortunately
the quality of the beers we tried (in particular The Rev. James) was
not quite as good. You pay your money and you take your choice.

Brewer Beer % Price Mark Comment
Greene King IPA 3.6 £2.50 3
Greene King Abbot 5.0 £2.70 3
Brains The Rev. James 4.5 £2.70 2.5 Not good but average

Railway Arms - Alton - SU 722 398

As usual, this pub was quite busy even on a Wednesday evening. Not
surprising really given the price of the beers and that it is the
Triple fff tie. No problems with beer quality; all the beers tried
were in very good condition, even the Solar Power(ed) guest from The
Isle of Purbeck.

Brewer Beer % Price Mark Comment
Triple fff Alton’s Pride 3.8 £2.40 4 ROC’s favorite
Triple fff Moondance 4.2 £2.50 4
Triple fff Stairway 4.6 £2.60 3.5
Triple fff Pressed Rat 3.8 £2.40 3.5 PV’s favorite
Triple fff Hallelujah 4.0 £2.50 3.5 Not TM’s favorite
Isle of Purbeck Solar Power 4.3 £2.50 3.5 Whoosh
