Wellingtons - Hale - SU 833 485

Large 1930’s roadside pub on Folly Hill. The pub has two bars; the
public with its TV and pool table on the left and the restaurant to
the right. Both bars were very busy when we called. Two real ales
were available, 3 Rivers Brewery’s Hilary Gold and Marston’s Night
Watchman, both of which were well presented.

Brewer Beer % Price Mark Comment
Marston’s Night Watchman 3.8 £2.80 3.5 Light and very drinkable session
3 Rivers Hilary Gold 4.3 £2.80 3.5 First one out was slightly tart

Nelson - Farnham - SU 849 471

Eric would no doubt cry to see his beloved pub as it is now but at
least it survives and was quite busy with both drinkers and diners on
our visit. Only one real ale available, Hogs Back TEA, which, when it
had warmed up a bit, turned out to be one of the best examples we had
sampled for some time. As this goes to prove, it is always better to
have one good condition beer available than three in poor nick.

Brewer Beer % Price Mark Comment
Hogs Back TEA 4.2 £3.05 3.5 The best for some time

Queens Head - Farnham - SU 839 469

We have always liked this pub and although now under the Fuller’s
umbrella, our views have not changed. The friendly atmosphere and
pleasant bar staff provide an oasis of calm in the middle of town.
Wednesday is Steak and Grill Night where you can have, for example, a
10-ounce Sirloin with veg and chips for £9.95. All four real ales
available were £3.00 a pint, which made the Gales HSB a very good
deal but the Discovery less so. Both beers tried, HSB and Butcombe
Traditional Bitter, were well kept.

Brewer Beer % Price Mark Comment
Fuller’s London Pride 4.1 £3.00 Not tried
Fuller’s Discovery 3.9 £3.00 Not tried
Gales HSB 4.8 £3.00 3.5 Enjoyed by Frank
Butcombe Traditional Bitter 4.0 £3.00 3.5 Enjoyed by the rest of us

Slug and Lettuce - Farnham - SU 841 470

Previously the Hogshead, this was by far the trendiest place visited
this Wednesday and also the venue with the fewest people. No doubt it
comes into its own on the weekends. Among the listed forthcoming
attractions was a German night, but on enquiry it seems this would
not include any beer from the country; what not even bottled Beck’s!
A bit to our surprise, the Wells Bombardier we tried was very
acceptable.

Brewer Beer % Price Mark Comment
Wells Bombardier 4.3 £2.85 3.5 Really quite nice
Hogs Back TEA 4.2 £2.85 Not tried

Marlborough Head - Farnham - SU 842 470

This previously many-roomed pub now has one large bar which circles
the serving area. There is a large ‘garden’ at the rear with a
covered patio for smokers and plenty of room for bands to set up on
the live music occasions. One of which was the recent annual charity
weekend to raise funds for locally based organizations. This year it
was in support of CHASE Children’s Hospice and they managed to raise
£2800. The assistant manager and head cellerman, Stuart, was proud of
his Cask Marque accreditation and the beer we tried, Ruddles County,
confirmed his skill.

Brewer Beer % Price Mark Comment
Greene King IPA 3.7 £2.40 Not tried
Ruddles County 4.3 £2.50 4 Excellent condition

Seven Stars - Farnham - SU 842 471

Although a pub has been on this site for over two hundred years the
current building dates from 1929. It was rebuilt in a pseudo- Tudor
style as an old coaching inn with a wide passageway on the right had
side leading through to the rear garden. This has now been blocked
off and two large French doors inserted in the front giving access to
the cobbled pavement There are three hand pumps but only one beer was
initially available when we called. One taste of the Old Speckled Hen
and that was heading for the hutch as well.

Brewer Beer % Price Mark Comment
Morland Old Speckled Hen 4.3 £2.80 0 Gone off

Albion - Farnham - SU 848 474

The second visit to this pub this year. Recently refurbished, they
have removed the large screen TV and moved the sofas into the back.
All very tastefully done but what are the brass bed headboards all
about? There is a large open area in the front of the pub. Bed and
breakfast accommodation at £70.00 per night per room will soon be
available. The two beers available, Ruddles Best and Greene King
Sundance were in good condition.

Brewer Beer % Price Mark Comment
Greene King Sundance 4.1 £2.60 3.5 Its alright said ROC
Ruddles Best 3.7 £2.60 3.5 This is better said PV
