For our final ‘long’ cycle ride of the summer we intended to treat
ourselves to a full evening at The Prince of Wales. However, we were
thwarted by the Morris Dancers and the untimely running out of both
the Hophead and Summer Lightning and had to take to our bikes again
in search of more beer. Next week the delights of North Lane,
Aldershot!

Prince of Wales - Farnborough North - SU 877 564

On arrival there were Morris Dancers in the car park, which did mean
it was quieter in the pub. ROC arrived and, inspired, gave us his
interpretation of the dance style. When the dancing in the dark had
finished, we were moved to accommodate their group. When the Dark
Star Hophead and Hop Back Summer Lighting had finished, we moved to
accommodate another pub.

Brewer Beer % Price Mark Comment
Fuller’s Chiswick 3.5 £2.50 3.5 Guest of the month
Irving Frigate 3.8 £2.85 3.5 Quite seaworthy
Dark Star Hophead 3.8 £2.85 4 The star of the show
Youngs Bitter 3.8 £2.75 3.5 Good session beer

Squirrel - Farnborough = SU 881 543

With our après diner arrival the pub was less busy than previous
visits and we were able to occupy our favored high table near the
bar. Ember Inns were still promoting Greene King IPA at £1.99 a pint
but we were not tempted even at that price. There was no sign of
Adnams East Green, the first ‘carbon neutral’ beer which was supposed
to be available in their pubs. Instead there was Beartown
Bearskinfull that, along with the Fuller’s London Pride we also
tried, proved disappointing.

Brewer Beer % Price Mark Comment
Greene King IPA 3.7 £1.99 Not tried
Fuller’s London Pride 4.1 £2.50 2.5 Very disappointing
Beartown Bearskinfull 4.2 £2.70 2.5 Again, very disappointing

Old Ford - North Camp - SU 886 537

This pub seems to have found a loyal following and was busy when we
arrived. Amongst the drinkers was the Mengo alter ego from Camberley,
the main difference being they drove rather than cycled. Still, we
had a nice chat about local pubs and in particular the lack of decent
pubs in Camberley; no wonder they take to their cars. The two beers
tried, Hobgoblin and Old Speckled Hen, were in good condition. You
knew EL Tel was back when he expressed the opinion that the bird was
better than the weird one.

Brewer Beer % Price Mark Comment
Wychwood Hobgoblin 4.5 £2.80 3.5 Very nice
Morland Old Speckled Hen 4.5 £2.80 3.5 Better than Goblin!
