Royal Arms Beer Festival - 12th August 2006

Comment

Since the demise of The Red Lion Beer Festival there have been
no festivals in Aldershot. So, although Heath End is over the
border in Surrey, a festival at The Royal Arms is as close as
we are going to get to one in our patch for the foreseeable
future. We had hopes. With no idea what a token was worth in
beer terms the first difficulty was understanding the system.
And you had to have a festival glass to be served in the beer tent.

Token Scheme

1 Day Token Scheme Additional Tokens Beer Price
Half pint glass and 5 Tokens £5 5 Tokens £4 0 to 4% 1
Half pint glass and 8 Tokens £7 8 Tokens £5 4 to 6% 2
Pint glass and 10 Tokens £10 10 Tokens £7 9% 4

4 Day Festival Pass
Half-pint glass and as much beer from the outside tent as you can drink - £50.

Beer List

Brewery Beer %

Hall & Woodhouse Tanglefoot 4.9
Wychwood Hobgoblin 5.0
Hop Back Summer Lightning 5.0
Theakstons Old Peculiar 5.6
Hogs Back A over T 9.0

Also scheduled to come on over the weekend were: -

Hogs Back Hair of the Hog 3.5
Black Sheep Best Bitter 3.8

Post script (on customer service)

So you pop in for a few beers and, not having a calculator with you,
opt for the £10 scheme. Not being a mild drinker, you try the 4 and 5
% beers and, hey presto, you find you have been paying £4.00 a pint.
Subsequent purchases of tokens bring down the average but it is still
on the expensive side.
Overall, to be commended for trying, but with such a limited beer
selection, high prices and non-returnable glasses, it was rather
disappointing.
