25th June 2008 - NOT THE LONGEST DAY CYCLE RIDE

Sampled by

By van PV, FN, KOC & TM with MG driving. By bicycle ROC. By motorbike VP & VP

Although ROC decided to cycle out to Long Sutton, the rest of us
decided to take advantage of HST Travel and set off by van. With MG
doing the driving (he was on tablets and unable to drink alcohol), we
decided to take advantage and stop off in Odiham for a quick one the
way.
ROC was waiting at The Four Horseshoes when we arrived. Which was at
the same time as this week’s special guests; Vince and Val who were
reliving their youth having recently purchased a Kawasaki 650
motorbike. No wonder ROC commented Vince would have no trouble biking
to Long Sutton! And here we were all thinking he must have been doing
some fitness training.

Bell - Odiham - SU 744 509

Sue and Bob had just celebrated fourteen years running this
comfortable and pleasant pub opposite the Parish Church. Tied to
Admiral they obtain their guest beers through the Scottish &
Newcastle Cellermans Reserve list, whilst SIBA membership also allows
them to obtain more local brews. They were just putting on a new
guest when we arrived but with half the label missing from the
barrel, were having difficulty identifying the beer. In the end they
thought it was McMullen’s Country Best Bitter, but you never know, it
could have been something else with ‘Country’ in the name! Whatever
it was, it was very nice.

Brewer Beer % Price Mark Comment
McMullen’s Country Best Bitter 4.3 £2.70 4 Very nice

Four Horseshoes - Long Sutton - SU 748 471

Tony and Val still have the pub on the market. After an initial rush
of enquiries, interest seems to have died down but they did expect
the sale might take some time. In the meantime, you can still get
some good pub grub and excellent beers to wash it down. They often
have beers from Archers and this visits offering was a very fine Best.

Brewer Beer % Price Mark Comment
Archers Best 4.0 £2.80 4 Very nice
Triple fff Moondance 4.2 £3.00 Not tried

Chequers - Well - SU 761 467

This Hall & Woodhouse tie is very popular with the dining set and is
more of a restaurant than a pub. But for those who still just want a
pint there are plenty of different areas where you can sit and not
interfere with those out for a meal. The Hopping Hare was very
refreshing and most welcome after the ride from Long Sutton.

Brewer Beer % Price Mark Comment
Hall & Woodhouse Badger 4.0 £2.90 Not tried
Hall & Woodhouse Hopping Hare 4.5 £3.20 4 Very nice
Hall & Woodhouse Tanglefoot 4.9 £3.20 4 Very nice

Hop Blossom - Farnham - SU 839 470

The large dog with ringlets matched the very pleasant and helpful
barman’s hairstyle nicely. After experiencing the beer prices at The
Chequers at Well, we were not surprised at the amounts charged at
this Fuller’s tie but they still hurt (one of us). Beer quality was
very good and you get a guest beer to try.

Brewer Beer % Price Mark Comment
Fuller’s Chiswick 3.5 £2.70 4 Very nice
Fuller’s London Pride 4.1 £3.00 4 Very nice
Fuller’s Discovery 3.9 £3.40 Not tried
St Austell Tinners 3.7 £3.00 4 Very nice

Lamb - Farnham - SU 842 466

Good Lord, freshly decorated, new flooring, refurbished toilets and
no Fokker in sight, the ‘new’ Lamb was…………….fortunately the same as
the ‘old’ Lamb. Excellent beer quality, knowledgeable bar staff and
friendly locals make for a pleasant drinking experience. Apparently
all the old Shepherd Neame ‘lets mention the war’ posters are now
somewhere in America.

Brewer Beer % Price Mark Comment
Shepherd Neame Kent’s Best 4.1 £2.95 4 Very nice
Shepherd Neame Whitstable Bay 4.1 £3.10 4 Very nice
Shepherd Neame Spitfire 4.5 £3.10 4 Very nice

Then for two it was the cycle home while three elected to catch the
train. Guess who did what!
