TC had mooted a return to Winchester for Round the World and with no one else being prepared to put any effort into suggesting an alternative it was readily accepted.

Comment | This was a typical O'Irish chain bar, complete with witty sayings adorning the walls. One was on about a Craic but the walls and ceilings seemed sound enough to us. As befitting an Irish bar the staff were Antipodean. What on earth is Guinness Red? Surely, like the model T, the only colour is black.

Comment | This well frequented little restaurant is by the cathedral green. The barman was relatively interested in our aim and gave us a sample bottle of a 'French' beer. Although undoubtedly brewed in Paris, it turned out to be a Mexican themed alco-pop, with Tequila providing the kick.

Comment | PV remembered this as an ordinary pub. But now, in no recession Winchester, it is a gastro-pub and a crowded one at that. They had two foreign beers on draught but at £5.00 a pint we could only afford one of them. After his sojourn in Micheldever, ROC caught up with the rest here.

Comment | A market and Ice Ring are set up in the cathedral grounds each Christmas. Amongst the many stalls selling the usual Xmas tat was one providing typical food and other goodies from Hungary, including beer. It had to be done. Shredder joined us in the cold.

Comment | This is a gem of a pub, comfortable like a pair of old slippers. Currently tied to Fuller's, the barman, Dave, liked the idea of Round the World and might have joined us if he wasn't working.

Comment | This is either an extremely quaint pub or overly pretentious depending on your point of view. The choice of beer made turned out to be brewed under license by Shepherd Neame. Blame the man who made the decision.

Comment | This is a large Fuller’s outlet but at least still very much a pub. Handily placed at the bottom of the High Street by, as the name suggests, the River Itchin.

Comment | This is Winchester's J D Weatherspoons outlet and as such carries an impressive beer list, including, of course some unusual real ales. But for now we stuck to the rules of R the W and only tried the foreign stuff. As always with this chain, the beer was a very reasonable price.

Comment | This old pub comes with sloping floors that make it rather difficult to negotiate at the end of a R the W tour. With three handpumps and four beers on the stillage behind the bar, this pub is a must for real ale drinkers when visiting Winchester. With no foreign beers available we had to break with tradition and imbibe British, which made a nice change from most of the bland fizzy stuff we had been drinking.

It was time to go and we headed back to the railway station. PV and Shredder caught the next train East but as this would require three changes to get back to Aldershot, including a walk from Farnborough Main to Farnborough North, most decided to wait in the nearest pub for the next direct service to Woking.

Just a footnote Winchester was put to the committee and it did save time and was easy for TC. Catching the quick train to Basingstoke (keeping that cool dude Shredder company) or just to get back in time for stricktly? and the only way being a lift from the brother in Farnborough, this was not mentioned? The last pub yes a dive and I am sure we wrote the name of the beer down but there you go.
I did not manage get a photo of PV in a mock Irish bar or drinking a French brew, he said it was an urban myth get me to the Hyde as soon as possible but we went the long way round.
